Professor Abebaw Fekadu is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, focusing on mood disorders, clinical trials and knowledge translation. He is also the Head of the World Bank Africa Centre of Excellence in Therapeutic Discovery (CDT-Africa) which supports advanced capacity building in drug, vaccine, diagnostic and other therapeutic discoveries. Prof. Fekadu established the only mood disorders and psychiatric rehabilitation services in Ethiopia, which sees over 100,000 patients/year. He also supports the Fed. Ministry of Health as a Technical Expert to the World Health Organization on mental health services. Professor Fekadu is also an African Research Leader (the Medical Research Council/DfID, UK) and a fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences. In addition, he serves on various committees, including WHO, National Commission for NCD and the Lancet Commission for the Future of Health in sub-Saharan Africa. He has visiting appointments with King’s College London and University of Sussex. Professor Fekadu graduated in Medicine from Addis Ababa University and trained in Psychiatry in Cardiff and at the Maudsley (UK).
